Most people think of JonBenét Ramsey as a Coloradoan and while she may have lived more of her six years in Colorado than anywhere else her family's roots are definitely East Coast, particularly West Virginia and Georgia. JonBenét is the subject of one of the most puzzling unsolved murder cases of all time. She was born in Atlanta, Georgia to wealthy businessman John Bennett Ramsey and beauty queen Patricia Ann "Patsy" Ramsey (née Paugh). After the family moved to Colorado when JonBenét was nine months old, her mother entered her in a number of child beauty pageants in different states. Among those she won were America's Royal Miss, Colorado State All-Star Kids Cover Girl, Little Miss Charlevoix, Michigan, Little Miss Merry Christmas, Little Miss Sunburst, and National Tiny Miss Beauty.

JonBenét was found strangled in the basement of her parents Boulder Colorado home on December 26, 1996. Her parents became suspects almost immediately, but no significant evidence has ever been found. Part of the reason that the unsolved case has been in the public eye for so long is the odd relationship between JonBenét and her parents. The world of child beauty contests has become a hot discussion topic often circling around parents depriving their children of a normal childhood so the parents can cash in (directly and indirectly) on their child's celebrity status. From time to time new evidence and theories have emerged but none have led authorities to the murderer.

JonBenét's mother Patsy was a beauty queen whose most notable title was Miss West Virginia (1977), a title she won after winning the Miss Parkersville Area contest. She went on to the Miss America Pageant and won a non-finalist special talent scholarship. Patsy married John Ramsey in 1980, gave birth to a son Burke in 1987 and to JonBenét in 1990. In 1993 Patsy was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, but with treatment it went into remission. She suffered a relapse of the cancer in 2003 and ultimately died of the disease on June 24, 2006. She is buried in front of JonBenét and beside a number of other family members
