AFTER THE FIRE
Jeannie’s Consignment

Longtime Paradise and Magalia denizens were familiar with 8000 square foot Jeannie’s Consignment on upper Skyway about halfway between Wagstaff and Clark.

Antiques, curiosities and household goods were Jeannie’s mainstays, but the constant turnover of items drew customers back again and again.

Jeannie’s was founded by Jeannie Marks and Betty Snyder. Then, in 1996, Carol Stark acquired ownership.

She kept the name Jeannie’s as an homage to the original owner.

Owing to its proximity to the ignition point and trajectory of the tsunami of fire Jeannie’s was quickly consumed on November 8, 2018.

Carol’s personal residence was also burned in the fire, but she and her father, who also lived in Paradise made it out safely. She feared that her horses would perish in the fire, but miraculously they survived.

A few months after the fire, Carol purchased a small (800 square feet of usable space) wooden building on Pearson Rd that has a number of incarnations including a real estate office, pool supply and hobby shop since its construction in 1954 and got to work to reopen Jeannie’s. She was able to reopen on November 9, 2019, one year and one day after the fire.

Jeannie’s soon outgrew the space and Carol commissioned a much larger 3000 square foot building to be built on the back of the lot. That building opened in April 2021.
