The Walmart parking lot in Chico and a large empty lot adjacent became a temporary shelter for those who could not find space in other shelters, or chose to sleep outdoors in tents rather than crowded emergency shelters with hundreds of other people. The Walmart parking lot also accommodated people with recreational vehicles.

In the first few days after the fire, donations of food, clothing and camping items poured in. Numerous volunteers offered medical assistance, brought food and bottled water or cooked food on site. Some helped direct people to social services agencies. Others simply provided a welcome ear to listen and a hand to hold.
