Residents of nearby Chico (10 miles downhill from Paradise) woke up to a thick black sky rimmed with yellow and red at the horizon. A similar scene occurred in the Ridge communities of Concow, Magalia and Paradise. Paradise and Concow were almost completely destroyed. Magalia lost about 25% of its homes, while Chico was largely untouched (a number of homes in unincorporated areas surrounding Chico burned).
