Hi CJ
We’ll need to call the flag picture an illustration since I Photoshopped in the rainbow.

Like many of our species, I’m exhausted by the divisiveness and downright hatred, fueled by confirmation bias, that is driving much of society. The American flag often seems to be used alternately as a shield or a weapon, rather than a symbol of unity.

An anecdote: A few months after 9/11, I was in Milan, Italy standing outside the magnificent Milan Cathedral. A priest came up to me and asked if I was an American (I ALWAYS look like an American). When I said yes, he slowly looked from side to side, motioned me close and opened his vestment to reveal a small American flag. He then formed his hand into a fist and pumped it up and down and said “Go America.”

I’ve never felt so proud to be an American. The priest didn’t ask my party affiliation or my stance on abortion or diversity or equality or global warming or anything else. Being an American was good enough.

THUS, here’s my caption, but I kinda doubt it will be a good fit for RANGE.

No matter what our political leanings are; left, right or teetering in the middle, it’s clear our democracy is in a state of crisis. Blaming only leads to more blaming. It is only by putting aside our differences that we can seek common ground. Just because there is no completely perfect union, or end of the rainbow, doesn’t mean it isn’t worth striving for.

Thanks
Doug
