Chico, California. 1929. Said to be developer Orville Tracy's crown jewel of his Eastwood Park development, as it had the steepest roof, this Hansel and Gretel cottage looks like it was built for a Hollywood set. The steeply pitched roof provides space inside for a 16-foot tall living room, as well as two upstairs bedrooms and a bath. When the current owners bought the house, it was painted yellow, and they returned it to a more dignified grey, with a vibrant, red front door (which had been painted turquoise by the previous owners). Rough, irregular plaster walls, original, mullioned windows, and some of the original hardware and fixtures inside are all part of this cottage's charm. Note the deeply recessed front entrance, accented by the catslide front gable roof, details which enhance the curbside appeal.
