Howell, Michigan. 1895. This exuberant, Queen Anne cottage is of course in reality a large and comfortable, Victorian home. Barber and other nineteenth century, pattern book publishers popularized similar "cottage" designs across the country, the word "cottage" intended to emphasize the picturesque and romantic qualities of the homes, no matter what their size. The owners of this period cottage used paint scrapings and old photographs to help restore their home to its original color scheme.
