A comparison of Babcock’s design for the courtyard of La Casa Torre and that of the Zwebells at Patio del Moro illustrates the genius of the latter at fashioning multiple-unit dwellings that nevertheless remain intimate and inviting. Despite its central fountain and lush landscaping, Babcock’s sprawling courtyard feels uncomfortably exposed, and gives the individual apartments little sense of shelter of privacy.
