In larger and more costly homes, lighting fixtures were often custom built following the architect’s specifications, and either built by local shops or by the custom-order departments of the larger lighting manufacturers.  This sconce, with its wooden backplate, hurricane-style chimney, and metal shade decorated with flowers, graces a San  Diego home by architect Cliff May, and was probably manufactured locally.
