The center of focus in the House of Hospitality’s courtyard in San Diego’s Balboa Park is Woman of Tehuantepec, a sculpture of a seated Indian woman, executed by artist Donal Hord. The House of Hospitality was one of the many buildings constructed for the 1915–16 Panama-California Exposition, a celebration of San Diego and the completion of the Panama Canal. The sculpture was added during the remodeling of The House of Hospitality, with work done under the direction of noted architect Richard Requa for the 1935-1936 California-Pacific International Exposition. The entire two-story structure was razed in 1995 due to structural problems, but was faithfully reconstructed and reopened in 1997. The spacious courtyard is a true courtyard, since it has a water element and is completely surrounded by habitable spaces.
