In the clay-tiled entrance gallery of the Roper residence, ranks of French doors open onto a large enclosed patio; the short flight of steps at background leads up to the foyer. The dramatic ceiling is constructed of heavy planks carried on roughhewn beams, giving the space an authentically venerable atmosphere. The sconce at foreground is original to the house, and is flame-cut from sheet metal.
