A towering saguaro cactus stands sentinel over the entrance to this home in Tucson’s Sam Hughes neighborhood. The Spanish Revival’s characteristic stucco exterior finish was equally suitable for landscape walls and other site structures, a fact that encouraged architects to integrate such features into the overall design. In this example, the landscape wall at foreground creates a raised plinth that is inflected inward to create a set of broad, flaring steps leading to the entrance path.
