This courtyard looks like it belongs on the planet Zorcon, but it is happily situated in Del Mar, California. Built in 1983–1984, the courtyard, house, and grounds were designed by futuristic architect James Hubbell. Constructing two domes by inflating huge plastic bags and then spraying foam onto them created the basic forms that became the main living quarters of the home. Rebar was applied over the domes, and then the entire framework was coated with plaster. Other additions to the house connected the two domes, which formed the courtyard. The courtyard becomes an integral part of the house, since most areas can be accessed from it or by passing through it. A fireplace and dining area built into the courtyard extends its use as an overflow area during parties. A sensuously curving stairway leads to a secluded study on the second floor.
