Volkswagen owners are a dedicated breed, often nurturing their aging vans far beyond their projected life. Such is the case with this orange 1973 Kombi with a quarter million miles, many of them logged on dusty back roads of Utah and Nevada. Miraculously the paint is original, and the only maintenance to its lustrous finish is an occasional waxing and buffing. The Kombi was retrofitted with the Campmobile package, which includes a sink, dining table, bench seat that converts into a bed, louvered side windows with curtains, child’s cot that fits across the flight deck, closet, storage cabinets, and rear bug screen. Volkswagens have a habit of appearing in motion pictures, most notably in Disney’s Herbie films. This orange Kombi had a cameo role in another Disney film, Meet the Deedles. The van is owned by Salt Lake City–based author/photographer Richard Menzies. Photographed at the Scott Shady Court, Winnemucca, Nevada.
