Another courtyard-like plaza completely surrounded by buildings is the Poble Espanyol. (Spanish Town), in Barcelona, Spain, constructed in 1929 for the International Exposition. The complex consists of 116 buildings that represent all of the regions and architectural styles of Spain. Poble Espanyol was renovated in the 1980s as part of a citywide sprucing up in preparation for the Barcelona 1992 Olympics. The courtyard also serves as a large open-air venue for concerts and theater productions. Winding streets lead off the main courtyard to artisans' shops many with small courtyards of their own.
