Popular Songs magazine from August 1935 featured bawdy actress and songstress Mae West (1892–1980) on the cover. West started acting at age five, was doing burlesque under the name the Baby Vamp at age fourteen, and then starred in a play titled Sex that she also wrote, produced, and directed when she was an adult. The play was shut down by the police in 1926 and West was jailed on obscenity charges, but West moved to Hollywood and enjoyed a long, adventurous career. She started out life as a brunette, but spent the rest of her life proving that blondes have more fun.
